Three Simple Ways to Tap into the Hidden Job Market

Jakob Barandun

Did you know that many job and internship opportunities are not advertised or posted online? Employers choose to do this for a number of reasons, including to save money on advertising or to source candidates through employee referrals. So, how exactly do you tap into the hidden job market and find positions of interest?

1. Leverage networking

Start by reaching out to your personal relationships (relatives, friends, coaches, mentors, etc.) and professional relationships (colleagues, faculty, supervisors, etc.). Ask your connections to introduce you to members of their extended network, and utilize platforms such as Eagle Exchange and LinkedIn to connect with alumni and professionals working in fields of interest. You can also use our summer experience database to find students who completed internships that you may be interested in and reach out to them to discuss their summer experience. The student community on Handshake is another great resource that extends beyond BC and opens up even more opportunities for connections. Finally, be sure to take advantage of the various networking events the Career Center organizes throughout the year. Learn more about upcoming opportunities and register on Handshake.

2. Create a list of target employers

This is a great way to be more strategic in your job or internship search. Reflect on which companies you are excited about and motivated to work for. At a minimum, it’s helpful to see where recent graduates have landed to better understand which organizations have had an active recruiting relationship with BC. Check out our first destination dashboard for the complete data set that can be filtered by major, industry, location, and more. Once you have compiled a list of companies, check their websites regularly for postings and attend recruiting or educational events they offer to learn more about what they do, meet people from the organization, and discover opportunities within the company. Also, don’t be afraid to proactively reach out to recruiters by sending personalized messages on LinkedIn to inquire about opportunities (and remember that patience and gratitude go a long way!).

3. Subscribe to news alerts

One of the most effective ways to learn about hidden jobs or internships is to stay up-to-date with prospective employers. Follow employers of interest on Handshake and through company social media channels. You can also sign up for Google News Alerts — just go to the Google Alerts page and type in which employers and fields of interest you want to hear about, and then you’ll start receiving emails with the latest news from Google. For additional industry-specific resources and reminders, subscribe to one (or two) of our career cluster newsletters. With these three simple strategies, you will be able to more effectively tap into the hidden job market. If you have questions or are feeling stuck at any point in the job or internship search process, we invite you to make an appointment with a career cluster coach on Handshake.
